Fruit Routes: Winter Walk

Fruit Routes: Winter Walk

Date: Fri, 31st Jan 2025 14:00 - 15:30

Venue: Barefoot Orchard, opposite Pilkington Library, Loughborough University campus

Join artist Mita Solanky for a walk around Fruit Routes – Loughborough University's edible route of hundreds of fruit and nut trees and bushes on campus.

Celebrations in cultures across the world mark the first day of spring at the midpoint between the shortest day on winter solstice (21 December) and the spring equinox (around 21 March). We'll explore this special time of year when the very first signs of spring are being felt and share our hopes for new growth.

This is the second in a series of walks following the seasons with our senses and connecting in embodied ways to experience nature. The next walk will take place on Friday 7 March 2025. Look out for details on the Fruit Routes website nearer to the date.

The walk will start at the Barefoot Orchard, located next to the Paddock and (almost) opposite Pilkington library. Look for the Fruit Routes information board near the Geography Weather Station.

This event is free and all are welcome (students, staff and the local community). We recommend advance booking so we can keep you informed of any last minute changes in the event of bad weather conditions. We will be walking along running routes and natural paths, so please wear suitable footwear and dress for the weather!

Book your free place (via Eventbrite)

Accessibility

Barefoot Orchard is on level ground. The route is not always on structured paths but is mostly flat. Some parts of the route are not accessible for wheelchair users or buggies so we do not recommend attending if this applies to you. If you have any specific accessibility requirements that you think we should know about, please let us know in advance by emailing Sustainability@mailbox.lboro.ac.uk or LUArts@lboro.ac.uk and we will do our best to accommodate them.

'Alien Invasion': An online video game by Ama Dogbe

'Alien Invasion': An online video game by Ama Dogbe

Fri, 3rd Nov 2023 - Sat, 27th Jan 2024

About Ama Dogbe
Ama Dogbe is a British-Ghanaian artist who builds video games, digital animations and audio-visual installations exploring autobiographical and utopian themes. Her recent work uses interactive virtual world-building as a tool to examine family, identity and the internet. She has created digital forests, sky mazes, and gleaming platforms that audiences can explore online. Her processes often use self-taught and collaborative techniques to produce experimental and unconventional outcomes. Ama has been commissioned by Spike Island, Bristol (2023) and tiata fahodzi, Watford (2022). She has also exhibited with Fermynwoods Contemporary Art (2022), East Bristol Contemporary (2022) and Attenborough Arts Centre, Leicester (2021).

About 'Alien Invasion'
Ama Dogbe presents a new version of Alien Invasion, an interactive web-based game. In Alien Invasion, figures descend upon a garden-like world, and players follow paths to uncover talismans, relics and icons. The game has been created in part through photogrammetry, the process of creating 3D digital outcomes from photographs. Using physical and digital repetition, Ama has created a web of symbols that are both strange and familiar. The game is accompanied by a soundtrack of electronic, ambient and contemporary hip-hop by musician Louis Jack. The video game will be available to play via the Modern Painters, New Decorators website. The project is funded by Arts Council England.
