The amazing landscapes of Charnwood are shaped by what lies beneath! As you explore, look out for the rocks which have been used in construction for more than two millennia, and have shaped buildings across the country. The oldest rocks in Charnwood Forest are found in Shepshed.
The most well-known places to visit are Bradgate Park, Beacon Hill and the Outwoods but there are also hidden gems such as Morley Quarry in Shepshed.
This wonderful little former quarry turned local nature reserve is where drilling revealed ancient lavas and ash layers that would have been erupted from a volcano. This is a landscape shaped by hidden volcanoes - we can find evidence they existed but don't know exactly where they were. Maybe you will find one or two!
