Sockman
Description
A quirky, greatly loved and much photographed statue that has become a symbol for Loughborough. Cast in bronze and created after a competition to find a new artwork for the town, the winning sculptor, Shona Kinloch, said her idea for the Loughborough Market Place installation is 'a man, rather on the stocky side, who sits admiring his zigzag sock.' The design on the sock is inspired by the woollen industry - hosiery and knitwear being the speciality - which contributed greatly to Loughborough's prosperity.
